Avicenna Center for E-learning and the Computer Center at the University of Baghdad, organized a seminar entitled (The Scourge of Drugs and its Harm to the Family and Society) on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.
The seminar was presented by Ins. Mohammed Abdul Karim and Ass. Ins. Maryam Ali Matloob.
It aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs. Ass. Ins. Maryam Ali explained the causes that lead to drug use, including family reasons such as the mother’s preoccupation away from the children, the father’s absence, the death of a parent, or overindulgent parenting, as well as bad companions and lack of monitoring.
Ins. Mohamed Abdel Karim presented another type of drug that has the same effect as natural drugs. These drugs are audio files in MP3 format with simultaneous frequency waves affecting the brain. These files are traded on websites. Therefore, the risks lie in the ease of transferring these files between devices and their difficulty to detect.
The researchers also highlighted its detrimental effects on both security and the economy, as well as its impact on individual health. It has been linked to conditions such as heart and lung diseases, along with psychological disorders that have been associated with an increase in homicides.
During the seminar, the two researchers advocated for implementing measures to mitigate this phenomenon. Their recommendations included promoting constructive activities during free time, enhancing media literacy, enacting stricter legislation, reinforcing religious values, fostering parental trust with their children, scheduling family travel time, organizing awareness workshops in schools to educate students about the repercussions and penalties associated with such behavior.
