The Avicenna Center for E-Learning at the University of Baghdad held a workshop titled “The Importance of Activating the Role of Family Guidance in Educational Institutions” on Thursday, July 4, 2024.
The workshop was presented by Ms. Intisar Hussein Hamid.
Ms. Hamid aimed to highlight the crucial role of the family in education. The family environment is where a child grows, develops, and acquires their initial behaviors and knowledge, which can have a lasting impact throughout their life. This environment can either be positive, imparting beneficial skills and behaviors, or negative, resulting in adverse effects.
She also explained the benefits of cooperation between families and educational institutions. Schools play a significant role in motivating students academically. However, a lack of understanding by educational institutions regarding students’ needs can sometimes lead to inappropriate behaviors such as aggression, mockery, withdrawal, and emotional tensions.
Ms. Hamid emphasized the role of psychological counseling in understanding and correcting student behaviors. The role of the educational counselor should be in close cooperation with the parents to overcome learning difficulties and address the reasons behind students dropping out or underperforming academically.
She stressed that the absence of cooperation between families and schools can lead to various problems, such as academic underachievement, lack of motivation, and the adoption of incorrect study habits, among other issues.
She called for improved communication between families and schools through a family guidance program. This program would provide families with guidance on how to properly raise their children, and a family communication program would facilitate contact with families when a child encounters a problem. Additionally, the educational counselor should monitor the homework diary as it represents the link between the school and the family.
