The Avicenna Center for E-Learning organized a workshop titled “Human Rights and the Concept of Sustainable Development in Ending Poverty” on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. The workshop was presented by Agricultural Engineer Ayat Mahmoud Ibrahim.
The workshop aimed to clarify the first goal of sustainable development, which is to end poverty and hunger. The presenter began by discussing human rights, highlighting key articles such as the right to dignity, freedom, and the enjoyment of rights without racial, religious, or linguistic discrimination. She also outlined current human rights violations, including forced evictions, water pollution, failure to raise low wages to ensure a decent life, and the prevention of hunger.
Ms. Ayat explained that the United Nations has prioritized the eradication of poverty as the first goal of sustainable development. She noted that poverty manifests as hunger, malnutrition, lack of access to education and essential services, social discrimination, exclusion from society, and limited opportunities for participation in decision-making.
The presenter also discussed various methods to combat poverty, including raising awareness, providing aid, education, empowering the poor, strategic planning, removing barriers for citizens, creating job opportunities for all, ensuring social welfare, and preventing food waste, among other measures.
