\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The Avicenna Center for E-Learning at the University of Baghdad hosted a workshop titled “The Phenomenon of School Dropout: Causes, Preventive Strategies, and Remedial Measures”\u00a0on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. The workshop was presented by Assistant Instructor Maryam Ali Matloob.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The workshop aimed to explore the causes of school dropout, which were categorized into academic reasons such as educational difficulties or lack of interest in studying; social reasons such as poverty, family violence, or other social issues; psychological reasons such as low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety; and economic reasons such as the need to work to support the family.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The researcher discussed the consequences of school dropout, highlighting the difficulties dropouts face in finding decent employment and the poverty they may experience, as well as the potential for involvement in criminal activities. The social consequences were also addressed, including the reduction of human capital and the limitation of economic growth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Furthermore, the researcher outlined strategies to prevent dropout, emphasizing the importance of identifying at-risk students and providing them with support, fostering a supportive and inclusive school environment, and offering vocational training for school dropouts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0At the conclusion of the workshop, the researcher urged efforts to encourage dropouts to return to school and pursue alternative education. She also recommended implementing programs that combine work and learning, as well as involving parents and the community in efforts to reduce dropout rates.<\/span><\/p>\n
